Typing Guide — Key Characters to Know

For basic everyday Nepali typing online you don’t need to memorise much. But a few characters trip people up regularly.

Long vowels need double letters or capital Short “i” (इ) is just “i”. Long “ii” (ई) needs “ii” or capital “I”. Same pattern — “u” gives उ, “uu” or “U” gives ऊ.

Retroflex consonants use capitals The retroflex sounds — ट, ड, ण — are typed with capital T, D, N. Lowercase t gives त, lowercase d gives द, lowercase n gives न. This is the most common source of errors in Nepali typing.

Aspirated sounds use two letters kh → ख, gh → घ, ch → च, chh → छ, jh → झ, th → थ, dh → ध, ph → फ, bh → भ, sh → श.

Special characters Single dot (.) becomes danda (।) when auto-convert is on. Double dot (..) gives double danda (।।). Tilde (~) adds chandrabindu (ँ) — used in काठमाडौं (kaaThmaDau~).

ऋ vowel Type “Ri” with capital R for the ऋ vowel. So कृष्ण is typed as “kRishna”.
